# Using Vanda in Your AI Assistant

Ask your AI assistant about retail order flow — in plain English — and get answers
straight from Vanda's data.

Once you connect Vanda to an AI assistant such as **Claude** or **ChatGPT Apps**, you can
ask questions like:

- "How much retail buying did NVDA see over the last month?"
- "Which sectors saw the most retail selling yesterday?"
- "Chart TSLA's daily retail net flow for the second quarter."
- "Rank the top 10 ETFs by retail buying this week."


The assistant fetches the data securely under your own Vanda login and gives you the
answer — a number, a ranked list, a chart, or a short write-up. You don't touch any
settings or code; you just ask.

## What you can explore

Vanda gives your assistant retail **order-flow** data — how much retail investors are
buying and selling — across two levels:

| Level | Covers |
|  --- | --- |
| **Individual securities** | Single names: equities, ETFs, ADRs |
| **Groups** | Sectors, industries, indices, and baskets |


For any of them you can look at:

- **Retail buying** — how much retail investors bought.
- **Retail selling** — how much they sold.
- **Net flow** — buying minus selling (positive means net buying, negative means net
selling).
- **Total activity** — buying plus selling combined.


Options-flow and price data are also available where your Vanda subscription includes
them — just ask for them by name.

You can view this over any period, as a single latest figure, as a trend or chart, or
as a ranked leaderboard comparing many names or sectors at once.

## Before you connect

You need three things before setup:

- A Vanda account with access to the relevant data products.
- A Vanda connection link from your Vanda contact. It should be an official
Vanda-hosted HTTPS link and usually looks like `https://<your-vanda-address>/mcp`.
- An AI assistant plan or workspace that allows custom MCP servers, custom connectors,
or custom apps. In some organizations, an administrator must enable this first.


Do not use a Vanda MCP link from a third party, a shared document you do not trust, or
an unofficial proxy. The connection should point to Vanda's own service.

## Connecting your AI assistant

You connect Vanda once, using the **connection link** your Vanda contact gives you. It
looks like `https://<your-vanda-address>/mcp`. There's nothing to install — you paste
the link into your assistant's connector settings.

### Claude (desktop, web, and mobile)

1. Open **Settings → Connectors** (in Claude.ai: **Customize → Connectors**).
2. Click **Add custom connector**.
3. Paste the Vanda connection link: `https://<your-vanda-address>/mcp`
4. Click **Add**. A **"vanda"** connector appears.
5. The first time you ask a data question, Claude opens a browser so you can sign in
(see [Signing in and permissions](#signing-in-and-permissions)).


Custom connectors work on the Free (one connector), Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise
plans. On **Team / Enterprise**, an administrator adds Vanda once under **Organization
settings → Connectors**, and each member then enables it under **Customize →
Connectors**.

### ChatGPT and other assistants

OpenAI now refers to many connectors as **apps**. If your ChatGPT workspace supports
custom apps or custom MCP connections:

1. Open **Settings** and look for **Apps**, **Apps & Connectors**, or **Connectors**.
2. Choose the option to add or import a custom app or connector.
3. Paste the Vanda connection link: `https://<your-vanda-address>/mcp`
4. Complete the Vanda sign-in flow when prompted.
5. Test the connection with a simple question, such as "What's the latest retail net
flow for NVDA?"


If you do not see a custom app or connector option, your plan, region, or workspace
administrator may not allow custom MCP connections yet.

Other assistants can use the same Vanda connection link if they support **remote MCP
servers over HTTPS** and browser-based sign-in. Check your assistant's help pages for
the exact setup steps.

## Signing in and permissions

Vanda always asks you to sign in — it uses **your own Vanda account**, so you see
exactly the data you're entitled to and nothing more.

The first time your assistant fetches Vanda data, a browser window opens on the Vanda
login page. Sign in (and approve the short access prompt if shown), and the assistant
continues automatically. You stay signed in until your session expires, at which point
you'll simply be asked to sign in again.

Your Vanda password is never shared with the assistant. Do not paste your Vanda
password, one-time codes, or recovery codes into chat.

The assistant can only use the Vanda tools exposed through the connector and only under
your Vanda entitlements. Vanda may log connector requests for security, support,
auditing, and service reliability.

## What you can ask

You don't need to learn any commands — just describe what you want. Here are the kinds
of questions Vanda handles well, with example phrasings.

### A single name or group

> "How much retail buying did Apple see last month?"
"What's the retail flow trend for the semiconductor sector this year?"


Best for "how much" and "what's the trend" questions. You get exact totals (net, buy,
sell), how many days were net-buying vs. net-selling, the biggest buy and sell days, a
month-by-month breakdown, and a ready-made chart — all in one answer.

### Compare or rank many at once

> "Rank the top 10 stocks by retail buying this week."
"Which sectors saw the most retail selling yesterday?"
"Top ETFs by retail net flow over the last month."


Best when you want a leaderboard instead of a single name. You can narrow it — for
example, "common stocks only" or "ETFs only" — so equities and ETFs don't get mixed
together.

### The latest reading

> "What's the latest retail net flow for NVDA, TSLA, and AMD?"
"Give me today's snapshot for the energy sector."


Best for a quick current figure across one or several names.

### A detailed history

> "Show me TSLA's daily retail buy and sell values for June."
"Give me the raw weekly flow rows for the tech sector this year."


Best when you want the underlying numbers period by period, rather than a summary — or
when you want options / per-strike detail.

### Choosing the time detail

Ask for the granularity you want. Vanda supports **10-minute, 30-minute, hourly,
daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly** views. For a long span, ask for **weekly or
monthly** — it's cleaner and faster than day-by-day.

You can also bound any question by date: "…between March 1 and June 30," "…as of
yesterday," or "…year to date."

## How Vanda interprets dates and data

Use these conventions when asking questions:

- **Dates and sessions.** "Today" means the current trading session, which may still be
in progress. Ask for "completed sessions only" if you want to exclude incomplete
data.
- **Granularity.** Intraday views are best for short windows. Daily, weekly, and
monthly views are better for longer comparisons.
- **Names and tickers.** You can ask by company name, ticker, sector, industry, index,
ETF, or basket. If a name is ambiguous, the assistant may ask you to clarify.
- **Entitlements.** If a field is not included in your subscription, the assistant
should say so rather than guessing or substituting another field.
- **Output format.** You can ask for a chart, ranked table, short written summary, CSV-
style rows, or raw period-by-period values.


Ask your Vanda contact if you need exact definitions for currency, units, market
calendar, timestamp timezone, data delay, or field-level methodology.

## Troubleshooting

**I cannot add the connector.**
Make sure your assistant plan supports custom MCP connectors or apps. In an enterprise
workspace, ask your administrator to enable custom connectors and add the Vanda link.

**The sign-in page keeps coming back.**
Your session may have expired, third-party cookies may be blocked, or your workspace
may not allow the Vanda connection. Sign in again, try a fresh browser session, or ask
your administrator to confirm the connector is allowed.

**The assistant says a field is unavailable.**
That usually means the field is outside your current Vanda subscription. Contact your
Vanda account manager to confirm access.

**The assistant picked the wrong security or sector.**
Ask again with a ticker, exchange, or more specific group name. For example, use
"Apple ticker AAPL" instead of "Apple."

**The answer looks incomplete.**
Long daily histories may be trimmed for speed. Ask for weekly or monthly granularity,
or narrow the date range.

**The numbers changed since the last answer.**
Today's trading data can update through the session. Ask for "as of the last completed
session" if you need a stable figure.

## Good to know

- **Ask by name — no IDs needed.** Just say "Apple" or "the semiconductor sector." Your
assistant looks it up before pulling data.
- **Summaries are exact.** Totals and trends are calculated directly from Vanda's data,
so the numbers are precise — not estimates.
- **Very long daily histories may be trimmed** to roughly the most recent year to keep
answers fast. For a longer view, ask for a **weekly or monthly** breakdown, or narrow
the date range.
- **Today's numbers update through the session.** Rankings include today's in-progress
trading by default. Early in the day this can look thin — ask to "exclude today" or
"completed sessions only" if you'd rather see finished days.
- **You only see what you're entitled to.** If you ask for data outside your
subscription (for example, options or price fields you don't have), the assistant
will let you know. Contact your Vanda account manager to expand your access.


## FAQ

**Do I need to install anything?**
No. You paste one connection link into your assistant's settings and sign in. That's
it.

**Which assistants work?**
Any assistant that supports remote MCP connectors or custom MCP apps, including Claude
and supported ChatGPT workspaces.

**Why am I being asked to sign in again?**
Your session expired. Sign in again when prompted and your assistant picks up right
where it left off.

**Is my data private?**
Yes. Every request runs under your own Vanda account and entitlements — you only ever
see what you're licensed for, and your login is never shared with the assistant.

**Something isn't available — why?**
Most often it's outside your current subscription, or the question was ambiguous about
which name or sector you meant. Rephrase, or reach out to your Vanda account manager
about access.
